Relevant Accomplishments

  • Oversee clinical quality of care delivery and performance of the Cardiovascular Service Line (CVSL) for Iowa Heart Center locations and specialties
  • Responsible for managing cardiovascular quality KPIs including 30-day readmissions and mortalities for acute MI, CABG, and CHF
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, legislative regulations, professional liability, and payer and consumer demands concerning quality patient care
  • Serve as Director of the MercyOne Iowa Heart Center Quality Board
  • Serve on the Executive Committee along with the President, Physician Chief Operating Officer and Chief Administrative Officer
  • Lead quarterly meetings of the electrophysiology expert panel compromised of 12 physician members from across the 92 hospitals composing the nationwide Trinity Health system
  • Body responsible for making recommendations to the Cardiovascular Clinical Excellence Council regarding electrophysiology products and procedures
  • Areas of focus include:
  • Improving consistent application of evidence-based practices in arrhythmia care
  • Making clinical practice recommendations in the areas of cardiac ablation, cardiac implantable electronic devices, and left atrial appendage management
  • Establish criteria for Centers of Excellence in arrhythmia management
  • Supply Chain – review vendor proposals and evaluate for potential system-wide cost savings
  • Innovation – provide a forum for Health Ministries to provide updates on active research and innovative proposals
  • Lead cardiology medical staff of 79 [physicians (45) and APPs (34)]
  • Serve as member of the Medical Executive Committee
  • Review credentialing requests for new cardiology physicians and APPs
  • Lead peer review team to evaluate quality and performance trends for members of the cardiology medical staff of 79 [physicians (45) and APPs (34)].
  • Serve as member of the Professional Practice Evaluation Committee
  • Review credentialing requests for new cardiology physicians and APPs when Chair is not available
  • Attend Medical Executive Committee meetings as cardiology representative when Chair is not available
  • Work alongside another physician co-director and administrative dyad to collaborate and lead 9 physician electrophysiologists, 4 APPs, and 30-35 additional clinical and office staff
  • Lead clinical, quality, research, and financial initiatives for the section
  • Effect positive culture change with continuous improvement process and regular feedback from stakeholders
  • Successfully established training program with 6 Fellows while planning program curriculum and rotations.
  • Act as liaison between the hospital, clinical administrators, and Fellows.
  • Ensure requirements are met for accreditation while continuously evaluating training program, faculty, and fellows.
  • Perform complex ablation procedures and all device implants
  • Increased same-day discharge rate for atrial fibrillation ablation patients from 10% to 90%, saving over $1 Million YoY.
  • Conduct scientific research, clinical trials, and post-market studies on multiple therapies and devices, including novel force-sensing ablation catheter with local impedance, low-energy therapies for VT termination, cryoballoon ablation of atrial fibrillation, and pulsed field ablation
  • Authored and co-authored publications of breakthrough and confirmation research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Work with multiple Fortune 500 medical device companies to assist in preclinical development of cardiac pacing and ablation portfolios
  • Assist in preclinical evaluation of technology being considered for acquisition
  • Helped lead 2 GLP studies through the FDA regulatory approval process
  • Developed a clinical evidence summary app for iOS and Android
  • Led a team of 5 physician contributors

  • Appointed by the Governor to serve as a physician member of 10 person Board responsible for regulating the practice of medicine and surgery, acupuncture, and genetic counseling for ~17,000 licensees in the state of Iowa
