Accomplishments as Interim CEO in the Medical Device Industry

  • Implemented and launched several successful, high-profile (industry-first) programs including major device, diagnostics and services at 3 Fortune 250 companies
  • Led $50M breakthrough (industry-first) cross-division product strategy at Medtronic to place implanted devices on the internet for remote patient disease management and monitoring, and the required devices and wireless capabilities;
  • Restructured large marketing and sales teams for optimal cross-company leadership, product management, commercialization processes, sales effectiveness and field execution in marketing, sales, corporate accounts and service; launched two new external defibrillators worldwide simultaneously (within months of each other);
  • As VP of Sales and Marketing launched 15 new products on Access® Immunoassay System (in-company diagnostic start-up at Sanofi) with sales of $65M over 4 years
  • Departed a multi-billion dollar medical technology company and was able to successfully transition to a “two-person start-up”, bootstrap the company through raising venture capital; develop and execute on business plans, develop a fully-functioning product, install pilot manufacturing, attract 3 strategic partners for investment, set up credible external suppliers. The company was eventually acquired by a major supplier to Rapid Diagnostics.
  • Prepared comprehensive. Integrated marketing and commercial plans and launched 20 new diagnostic tests on Access® Immunoassay System with $75 million in sales over 4 years;
  • In Sanofi’s intra-company diagnostics venture NDS, Inc., led product planning – including assay/menu planning, overall industrial design direction, customer experience strategy, and comprehensive go-to-market and commercialization plans;
  • Conceived, directed and implemented global product strategy, introduction, and commercialization of Access Immunoassay System;
  • Infused a customer-driven culture and customer experience mentality across entire company and all functions – through leadership by example and positive influence skills;
  • As Sr. Director of Instrument Systems Operations (a Development and Manufacturing group) responsible for product development and manufacturing of external medical devices and instrumentation for Cardiac Rhythm Management – reporting to the President of the Pacing business;
  • Lead development to initial clinical placements of industry-first capability that enabled implanted medical devices (pacemakers, defibrillators, et.al.) to be connected to the internet for remote device and patient management (2090 Programmer, CareLink monitoring device and network, and advanced “distance” telemetry);
  • Developed and delivered a state-of-the-art cardiac device Programmer in 39 months (2090 CareLink Programmer-networked); for support of a new family of cardiac devices and future cardiac device platforms (that the current Programmer was technologically unable to support);
  • Lead development and implemented the necessary wireless communications (telemetry) and connections to support “connected healthcare” of patients and their medical devices in the Cath Lab, Clinic, and Home – The CareLink Network;
  • Managed strategic relationships with IBM, IDEO (product development firm) and Microsoft.
